On a recent trip to Europe passing through Schiphol Airport, I came across a man with that phrase emblazoned on his T-shirt, across three lines. I asked him a question: “Is there any other kind of Harley but authentic?” He glanced down at his shirt, smiled, and walked on.
Despite the axiom violation (which in fact may not have been printed by Harley-Davidson itself), no HOG rider I know of would say that there were inauthentic Harleys — well, with the possible exception of the Sportster. But no wonder that the Dutch translator of Authenticity, SDU Uitgevers, chose to place a picture of a bright, gleaming Harley on the cover of Authenticiteit to exemplify the subject. Which was, by the way, why I was in the Netherlands — to launch the new translation.
