Me-tailing in the MEconomy

by Jim Gilmore

I just finished reading this U.S. News & World Report article, “The Store of YOU“.  It proved to be a most rewarding read, as the piece really validates the thinking that Joe first began and that undergirds all our collaborative work.  As I often tell folks, if you really want to be a student of authenticity, or at least authenticity in the context of business, go retrace our intellectual journey from its origin in Mass Customization, through to the Experience Economy, and now Authenticity.

I think my favorite part of the U.S. World & News Report article is CafePress’s use of the term “me-tailing” and the idea that ours is a “meconomy.”  Could any two terms more wonderfully capture the idea of an Experience Economy in which consumers buy predominately on the basis of an offering conforming to self-image? We could have used one of those terms in the title or subtitle of our book!
